Weight Check in.

I started back at work yesterday. Between Cardio Rehab and doctor's appointments, I intend on only working 28 hours at week until the end of the year.

I've been plateauing in my weight loss, I only lost about 2 pounds in the last 2 weeks. I'm not far away from my target weight loss. It'll be simpler to not snack now that I'm at work.

Weight Check-in: Post Heart Attack

I lost 5 lbs this week. I spent two nights in the hospital, but I managed to get down a few pounds.

I'll have more to tell from my hospital visit, but I don't have quite the energy to discuss.

My Heart Attack

Wednesday night, I had a heart attack.

I woke up a little after midnight with discomfort in my should and I was sweating a lot. I thought I slept on my shoulder wrong, so I took some Tylenol and a shower and tried to sleep. I also had a heighten sense of smell and could smell my body odor. I also tried to stretch a bit. I then tried to sleep again, but I was in too much discomfort. I went downstairs and looked for a card in my wallet that described a heart attack symptoms.

I realized I had two of the four and decided to call 911. I found some aspirin and chewed them and told my wife and then waited for the paramedics.

I wound up in the emergency room at the hospital. They gave me nitro and that didn't help. They gave me more aspirin and that didn't help.

They rolled me into a x-ray room and they gave me morphin, so I don't remember much of the night. Eventually, they decided to give me an angioplasty and a stent in my heart.

Tuesday Weight Check-in: really surprised

I'm really surprised by my results this week. I'm down 2 pounds. I have stopped writing things down and I haven't taken oil in a while. I've been very depressed at work, but I've kept on walking to and from work and I've been eating salads for lunch.

I also have been planning on trying the Paleo Diet for two weeks to see what the effect is.

I have a doctor's appointment on Thursday to talk about my test results. I went last week for a lipid screen, so I'll know what my score is.

A few years ago, my Mom said that this because there was so much television coverage out of Denver.

It's amazing all of these Republican Concern Trolls coming forward on Obama's pick for VP.

In fact, I heard Guilliani on the News this morning trolling about Hillary getting snubbed.

It's really sad that the Republican's only way to get broadcast time is to do this, perhaps they have no good choices on their end.

Random Thoughts

What have we been eating?

I've been thinking a lot about what we eat. I've picked up The Paleo Diet book and I've been reading about what Fats to eat and what not to eat. I'm really interested in what we eat.

When I went on vacation, I visited the graveyard that my father, his brothers and my grandfather were buried in. My father and his brothers died when they were in their Forties and Fifties. My grandfather died when he was sixty. I wonder if it was because of my father and uncles diet and the fact that they smoked. I've been reading on what we eat in this country and how to improve my health. I would like to limit my chance of dying by choosing better food.

I think the low carb/high fat diet will work. The Paleo Diet and similar diets are interesting because they limit processed foods, beans, potatoes, grains and beans. Which make no sense to me. The carbs I get but beans. Why not?

I also believe in the 85/15 rule. 85 percent of the time, I need to eat right but the other 15% is alright.

What would I do if I won the lottery?

I play the Colorado Lottery and Powerball every week. I think this helps me sleep at night because I daydream about winning the lottery and what I would do. My dream is to pay off the house, make sure the kids are provided for, buy a house in Boulder or Stapleton and just do volunteer work. I can't sleep sometimes, I unless I think of this.

What would I do started winning in poker?

I wish.

Tuesday's weight-in

I lost weight last week and I'm close to my target weight of 260lbs. I really didn't do much this week, I haven't been taking the oil and I didn't go to the gym this week. I start writing down what I eat but usually stop when I go home after work.

My pants feel a little tighter but I haven't lost a notch in my belt.

I continue to take all of those supplements.

I've been kind of stressed at work, so I think that adds to my apathy with my weight loss.

Weight Check July 22

I'm down a pound and a half from last week. It's good considering, I wasn't writing what I ate this weekend and I didn't exercise as much. I went to the Gym once, but I don't know if that was enough. I continue to walk to work and back everyday so at least I get some work out.

Next week, my family and I are returning to Buffalo New York for a family reunion vacation. We are driving about 24 hours to get there. Buffalo's best known for chicken wings, beef on 'weck and pizza. My favorite thing is rye bread.

The first thing we're going to do when we get there is go shopping for some good food that we can eat (lettuce, fruits, vegetables, etc). I'm going to try hard to keep on my diet there.

I think one wing is about 150 calories so at most I could have 4 which is 600 calories.

My plan there is to:
- stick to my low-carb diet with the oil
- write down what I eat.
- plan the day out
- exercise by running or going to a health club.

Bankroll update 7/14/2008

I haven't been playing and studying poker with the same intensity that I used to: having kids, working out and working on the job has that effect on you. I do still play occasionally. My favorite game is Omaha Hi-Lo Limit $.10/.20 - $.50/$1 limits on pokerstars. I've also played a few single table NHLE $1 sit and go's on pokerstars as well.

I was hoping to get a 'return' bonus from FTP, so I've been avoiding playing there. The limits are high there so I've been preferring to play on pokerstars.

Early Weight Loss Check in: 7/14

I did an early check-in this week because I'm traveling for work. I lost two pounds last week and I'm well below my ultimate goal. It looks like I'll be below 260 when I travel to Buffalo New York for vacation.

I'm concerned with traveling again but I think it'll be alright.

Weight Loss Check in

I only lost 1 pound this week. On the weekends, I stopped taking the oil and it was the Fourth of July weekend. I think I need to stick to the oil on the weekends.

I created a spread sheet to keep track of my weight lost and goal and this is what it currently looks like. My target weight is based on my starting weight - 2lbs/week with adjustments for vacation, holidays (thanksgiving, xmas), but my two big goals are 220 by mid January and 170 by July 2009.

220 represents just being overweight and 170 represents normal weight.

I'm under my target weight right now and if I'm over ten pounds away from my target, I'll adjust it, but the 6 lbs buffer gives me some room to fail a bit.

Supplements purchases

This is what I brought yesterday and the effects that the supplements are suppose to do.

  • Magnesium Caps - 400mg - Helps with Nerve function and hypertension
  • Vitamin C - 500mg - antioxidant
  • CoQ10 - 60mg - antioxidant, Heart, and High Blood Pressure
  • Vitamin D-3 - 1000IU - Coronary Disease prevention.
  • Garlic - 600mg - for atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and high blood pressure
  • Fish Oil - 1200mg - Coronary health
With my other medicine and the small aspirin I took 9 pills this morning.

I tried to find Vitamin K-2, but they didn't have the dose and the kind of K-2 I wanted.

I need to monitor myself the next few days to make sure I don't have any side effects.

Weight Check in and Supplements

I lost a surprising amount of weight this week. I was down almost 3.5 lbs. I thought I was bad this weekend. We went to a hot-dog stand in the mountains and had Dairy Queen small ice cream. I didn't take any oil this weekend and relied on nuts between meals to snack.

Exercise.

At the Gym, I ran about 30 minutes at 4.6 miles/hour about four times last week. I'm trying to increase my time while still keeping my heart rate around 140. I don't feel bad about not going more because I walk to and from work everyday for a total for 4 miles.

Books.

I picked up a "Reverse Heart Disease Now" book from the Tattered Covered this week. I wanted to take more supplements and see what they recommend.

Pills I take

Every morning I take the following pills
- aspirin 81mg
- Gemfibrovil - 600mg - anti-lipid medicine
- Diovin - 160mg - anti-HBP medicine
- Fish Oil - 1200 mg
- OneADay Men's Multivitamin.

I would like to get off of the Gemfibrovil and Diovin, but I think losing weight will help with that. I want to reverse the plaque build up, so I was looking for Supplements that would help with that.

Shopping list.

Base on the book and some websites, I'm going to get the following supplements at Vitamin Cottage
- Fish Oil - The recommended dose is 2-4 grams, but I'm taking walnut oil and ELOO
- Vitamin C - The OneADay has 90 mg, I will try to get it up to 500 mg
- Magnesium - 400 mg
- CoQ10 - Gelcap 100-300mg form
- Vitamin K-2 (Menaquinone-7 ) 150 mcg
- Vitamin D-3 (cholecalciferol) in Gelcap form

Tuesday Weight-in

Weight Lost

I lose three pounds this week. I stuck very well to the diet. This weekend when I wasn't taking the oil, I snacked reasonable well. I added nuts to my diet. I notice my set point is less. I need less food to feel full.

Food Journal

I guess I could stop writing down my food during the day, but I need that discipline to keep track. For me, this is the only thing that works. I have been on diets before but this is the only thing that consistently works for me.

Stress Test

Last week, I went to Boulder to get a Stress Test with my doctor. I think I did okay, My doctor administered the test and he didn't have any strong comments. I have a follow up planned with him next month to talk about all of my results. He did say that if I was to run, try to keep my heart rate at around 130-140 range.

Exercise

I've been real good with exercising. This weekend I worked out twice at the gym and I ran for 30 minutes on the treadmill keeping my heart rate at around 140.

Tuesday Morning Check in

I lost about 3 lbs last week, even with the birthday party on Saturday for my twins (one year old) and my niece (3 years old). I had some cupcakes, but I don't think I was overboard.

One things I notice by taking the oil daily is that I have less of a craving for breads. I don't feel the need to include it in every meal.

When I run on the treadmill, I set little mini goals to reach: 'Can i reach the 0.50 mark without stopping', 'Can I make it to 8:00 without stopping?'. My ultimate goal is 170lbs, but my mini goals are:

  • Lose 12 lbs before our Family reunion in August (6 weeks from now). Goal is 260lbs
  • Lower my waist size to less than 40 inches. (This indicates a factor for heart problems).
  • Get down to 220 by December 31, 2008/ BMI < 30, so that I would be considered to be overweight instead of obese. (52 lbs in 28 weeks)
Tim Russert died last week. I felt akin to him for several reasons, he died of a heart attack and he was from Buffalo. He had a calcium blockage in the left anterior descending coronary artery which I have as well. It adds energy to my wanting to lost weight and get healthy.

My brother who is two years younger than I called last night and we talked a little about our tests. I'm glad I could talk to him.

Tomorrow I have my Stress test at the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine. I'm anxious to talk to my doctor about all of the results.

I had the best Father's day moment on Sunday. My son Jon, is a brute and very physical but after a full day playing and late in the afternoon, he crawled up on me and fell asleep in my arms. That was really nice.

Weight Check: Initial Success

I now don't think our bathroom scale is broken. I weighted myself in the morning and it said 274.5 lbs. I've lost about 5.5 lbs. I'm going to mark it as 275 lbs for convenient sake.

I was very good yesterday. I had to travel for business and I had to eat out for a few meals. I was very concerned about that, but I made a meal plan in my head:

  • At the airport I had a McDonalds Premium salad (Southwest), half a package of dressing, and a small parfait
  • For breakfast an Egg McMuffin with Hashbrowns (my only indulgence)
  • Lunch was catered with a small sandwich from Panera and some side salad;
  • and finally for dinner I went to a real restaurant at the airport and had salmon with vegetables (without the garlic mashed potatoes and just a little blue cheese dressing for the house salad).
  • I also had red wine at dinner and on the plane back.
  • For all my salads, I used the 'dip the fork in the dressing first method' to just get a little dressing on the greens.
I didn't know how many calories I did, but I figured it must have been okay for the day.

Weight Check; scale problems?

I weighted myself this morning on our bathroom scale. I was really shocked to find that I weighted the same as I did at the doctor's office two weeks ago. I've been on my diet for a week now and I haven't been over 2200 calories in a day for over a week. I should have lost at least 2 lbs by now.

My wife says I could have put on muscle weight, but I think the scale is wrong. I'm going to see if there is a scale at the gym that I can test.

I'm starting my first day on my new diet. I'm trying the Shangri-La Diet. My current weight is 280 and I have to do something.

This morning I had a bagel and cream cheese and some coffee. I walked to work. I'm suppose to drink a table spoon of oil after an hour of non-eating. It's gross, but not as bad and I thought it would be.

I went to the doctor's last week, so these measurements are based on that.

Crash up

On Friday, our car was involved in a car accident. It was hit by a motorist going too fast on our street. We were lucky because my wife and daughter had just gotten home from a late night of shopping.

I think the driver of the other car was pissed at us, because they tried to talk to us and I said:

"I'm sorry, you just smashed our car, I don't have any sympathy for you".

The passenger and driver of the car wasn't hurt, but it's been a pain. We rented a new mini-van and now we have to let the insurance company take care of the problem. Hopefully, we can be made whole. We hoping that our car was totaled so we don't have to drive it again.

A long long time ago, I had the great idea of creating a cobweb site blog that would contain links to old websites. I was a fan of Web 0.1 and the leap from a text based internet (gopher, NNTP, UUCP) to GUI based internet (web, http, html). I had to abandon that project, because I didn't have time to maintain and search for cob-websites. My blog on cob-websites eventually became a cob-website itself.

The folks at waxy.org found this video from 1995 and it contain examples of old websites including Nintendo and Yahoo. Their post even contains a rundown of the video.

Music: Iggy Pop/Ryuichi Sakamoto - Risky

In the late 1980's I had a copy of Ryuichi Sakamoto's Neo Geo Album. I really loved the music on it and this single I still sing to myself.

From Wikipedia:

In 1987, Pop appeared (along with Bootsy Collins) on a mostly instrumental album, Neo Geo by Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. The music video for "Risky", written and directed by Meiert Avis, won the first ever MTV "Breakthrough Video Award". The ground breaking video explores (Persian: فریدون اسفندیاری)'s, transhumanist philosopher FM-2030's ideas of "Nostalgia for the Future", in the form of an imagined love affair between a robot and one of Man Ray's models in Paris in the late 1930's. Additional inspiration was drawn from Jean Baudrillard, Edvard Munch's 1894 painting "Puberty", and Roland Barthes " Death of the Author". The surrealist black and white video uses stop motion, light painting, and other retro in-camera effects techniques. Meiert Avis shot Sakamoto while at work on the score for "The Last Emperor" in London. Sakamoto also also appears in the video painting words and messages to an open shutter camera. Iggy Pop, who performs the vocals on "Risky", chose not appear to in the video, allowing his performance space to be occupied by the surrealist era robot.

Perino played down the notion that McCain may want to distance himself from Bush, whose approval ratings remain near historic lows. “The president is very popular within the party,” she said.
This is the problem with this Whitehouse, it views itself as the President for the Republic Party, not the President of the United States.

Outsourcing: Part II

This is an interesting article about the state of outsourcing in India.

Yet, India, for all its glory, is still the world’s back office. India's tech industry is a "services" industry. The Indians don’t do the thinking. The customers do. India executes.

As a result, India has not learned to invent technology products of its own. Barring a few exceptions, the huge amount of venture capital chasing India finds it difficult to be deployed. There is way too much money, way too few deals. Instead, tech-sector VCs are now diverting capital to retail, real estate, hotels and other non-tech sectors.

Out of the millions of folks in India, it's still a small percentage that are in IT or Technology. Until India begins to 'outsource' to itself and discover it's own consumer base, it will always be a back office.

Outsourcing coming back?

I saw this graph this morning on yahoo. It looks like the Indian Rupee is down almost 10 % from last year.

The chinese Yuan is doing better as well.

At a certain point, US businesses will have to look at the ROI of outsourcing businesses across the sea and determine if they need to bring work back 'on-shore'.

Natural-born citizen.

There has been some discussion lately on McCain and whether he is a natural-born US citizen. The US Constitution says:

No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President;

If it's one thing I realize about national elections, is that the constitution won't get in the way. The 12th Amendment states:

The electors shall meet in their respective states and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves;
When Bush and Cheney were running in 2000, both were residents of Texas. George Bush was Governor and Dick Cheney was running Halliburton out of Houston. Only by transferring his residency back to Wyoming was he able to get elected.

When I first read about this story in 2000, I knew then we were in trouble.

They are brilliant, they remind me much of a harder B.A.D. Here's their song "The News"

I heard an interview with them on Fresh Air, but I think the best thing I heard was a interview on Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) Jonesy' Jukebox (Indie 103.1 show, link to Carbon/Silicon interview)

How many middle men?

I'm convinced that in the era of creative home loans, mutual funds companies scandals, and creative business practices, that there has to be standard for the amount of profit and revenue a bank or financial group can make in any given transaction.

Web Trend Map 2008

Information Architects Japan posted a Web Trend Map 2008 mapped on the Tokyo Subway system.

I found it via boingboing.net post.

This is a cool map, but it really doesn't convey the information in a good manner:

  • Why is Skype, eBay, Paypal and Messenger on the same line?
  • Why is Gawker, Adobe and IBM on the same line?
  • It's great that Google is the downtown, by why is Flickr and Facebook closer to downtown than Google?

A better way to represent this information is categorize by website type (news, gaming, social networking, media, portal, etc) and/or use a tag cloud to 'connect the dots'.

I would then like to see what shows up downtown and what is considered to be in the suburbs.
